Pakistan Military Says Helicopter Wreckage Found; Six Dead, Including Army General

Updated

Pakistan's military says the wreckage of a helicopter that went down on August 1 in the country’s flood-stricken southwest has been found. An army general and five other members of the military onboard were killed, it said.

The helicopter, which was on a relief mission in a flood-affected area in the southwest, lost contact with the air-traffic control tower in Balochistan Province on the previous evening.

A military statement identified the deceased officer as regional commander Lieutenant General Sarfraz Ali, adding that the cause of the crash appeared to have been bad weather.

Rains and flash floods have killed nearly 500 people across the country since June, including about 150 people in Balochistan.

Pakistani President Arif Ali, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and other senior politicians offered their condolences to the victims' families.
